Those in attendance were: Julie Rule, Norma Parrot, Jim Frakes, Terri Dwyer, Mayor Kathy Rose, and Meredith Hauck, Director of Community Relations (recorder). Motion to approve Carlson made a motion to approve the minutes and Rule seconded. All voted in favor. Minutes of June 2 and Motion carried. July 7, 2010 ETC Survey The City received the results from its 2010 ETC Citizen Survey. Hauck provided a packet to the Park Board that contained slides from the August 3 BOA meeting about the overall results of the City and the Parks and Recreation section slides. The Board commented that outdoor athletic fields and youth athletics were priorities for the residents. Frakes and Mayor Rose commented we would need regional initiatives to support fields in Riverside. Hauck added that the Girls on the Run program would provide an additional youth athletic program in the City. Rule asked if most cities did their own leagues or contracted out. Hauck explained it varied by City — some run their own leagues, while others contract that out. Another priority is senior programming. Hauck explained the Senior Programs at the Community Center are very popular, but 95% of the participants are from outside of Riverside. The mayor said she knew of seniors in town who didn't attend these programs because it would mean admitting they fell into that category. Carlson suggested adding more educational classes. Dwyer suggested not specifying the classes were for "seniors" but calling them "Master's" classes. Hauck said the Recreation Division staff would develop a list of new programs and ideas from the identified priorities and present that at a future meeting. Renner Brenner Park Hauck explained that during the FY 2010 -2011 budget process, the Board of Aldermen approved $100,000 for improvements to Renner Brenner Park in the Capital Improvement Plan. During discussions, the Park Board identified they would like to spend this money on a new shelter house and putting the finishing touches on the park. Staff met and determined a list of items that need to be completed to finish the work in the park. They include: Item Cost Estimate Timeline Department Responsible Regrading areas $4,000 In progress — complete in Fall 2010 Capital Projects Spraying weeds on retaining walls Spraying riprap near stream Adding stepping stones between sidewalk Sod and seed near playground Grind stumps and trim trees $3,000 In progress Public Works Add light under bridge Unknown Getting bids Public Works New picnic table and pad by skate park $2,400 - $3,400 Not started Public Works New Grills — 2 (one large, one small) Unknown Getting cost Public Works New Trash Cans — 6 $3,600 In progress Public Works New Light Fixtures —12 Unknown Getting cost Public Works New Picnic Tables —10 $10,000 Getting cost Public Works New park entrance signs (rules /hours) Unknown Getting bids Comm. Rel. New park history sign Unknown Getting bids Comm. Rel. New Shelter House Unknown RFP — Sept. Comm. Rel. New Slab The Park Board decided to purchase trash cans, light fixtures and picnic tables that are consistent with those at the Welcome Plaza. They would like the Gazebo to be removed and replaced with a small shelter house and table. Keep the grill near that area. Need to make sure excavating has been done in that area. The Park Board reviewed options of different types of shelter houses. They would like it to remain consistent with EH Young Park. Mayor Rose and Rule thought that the picnic table by the skate park was specifically designed to be a skate prop. Look at maybe adding another table in that area that can be bolted down. Other Discussion Mayor Rose asked when the diving board at the pool would be fixed. Hauck said it would not be reinstalled until next season because of the amount of time it takes to get a new one or the old one repaired. Rule said that Platte County has started to do studies on how to utilize the new park tax dollars. There are opportunities for Riverside residents to get involved on communities. She asked the Board to let her know if they know of anyone who is interested. Adjournment — 7:31 p.m. Rule made a motion to adjourn and Dwyer seconded. All present voted in favor. The next meeting will be held July 7, 2010. Meredith Hauck
