HomeMy WebLinkAbout2014-03-11 Special Session Town Hall Meeting MINUTES SPECIAL SESSION BOARD OF ALDERMEN RIVERSIDE, MISSOURI Tuesday, March 11, 2014 6:00 p.m. The Board of Aldermen for the City of Riverside, Missouri, met in special session in the Board of Aldermen Chambers at City Hall, 2950 NW Vivion Road, Riverside, Missouri, on Tuesday, March 11, 2013. Mayor Rose called the meeting to order at 6:04 p.m. Those in attendance were Mayor Kathy Rose, Aldermen Art Homer, Mike Fuller, Chet Pruett, Brad, Cope, Aaron Thatcher, and Ron Super. Also present were City Administrator Greg Mills, Deputy City Clerk Sarah Wagner, Finance Director Donna Resz, Community Development Director Mike Duffy, Public Works Director Tom Wooddell, Administration Director Meredith Hauck, City Planner Jackie Carlson, City Engineer Travis Hoover, Major Chris Skinrood, Fire Chief Gordy Fowlston, Fire Marshal Keith Payne, Police Captain Mike Castanzo, Police Captain Gary McMullin, and Executive Assistant Stacey Rasco. TOWN HALL @ 6:04 P.M. Mayor Rose welcomed the public and introduced the MEETING members of the Board of Aldermen. She stated that the purpose of this meeting was to discuss different topics and ideas and the goal is to gather feedback to utilize with the information gathered from the ETC survey to create a future road map for the Board. City Administrator Greg Mills introduced himself and all staff members present were introduced. David Thatcher - 4417 NW Indian Lane- Asked about code enforcement, large tree and brush pick up and future plans for Jumping Branch Trail. It was discussed by staff that Public Works would look into picking up larger brush items if brought up to the curb. Jumping Branch Trail is in the design stage now and is scheduled for construction in June of 2015. Code Enforcement was addressed as a priority for this spring. Mayor Rose talked about the Line Creek beautification project planned as well as the opportunity for citizens to utilize the composting options available at Damon Pursell. Nancy Hammond asked about the City's partnership with the YMCA and how that would affect current programming. 1 Jackie Carlson said that some of the business might be open to that idea, but they have some limitation due to safety and confidentiality. Meredith Hauck said that they just started featuring a Riverside business in the newsletter and plan to continue this. Captain Costanzo added that as president of the Riverside Chamber of Commerce they are working on adding a business directory to the Chamber's website. Margie Kinslow asked about senior housing in Riverside and the possibility of a blood drive. Meredith Hauck said that the City has done blood drives in the past and will look into future ones. Mike Duffy addressed the need to senior housing and the continued discussions that the City has regarding this topic. Charlotte Teel commented that their many seniors that are struggling in the community with the high cost of utility bills and other things. Mayor Rose said that Platte County Senior Services has many programs available to help seniors with some of these issues. Kimberly Johnson- 1908 NW 45 Street- Asked if the City had plans to bury any utility lines. She said she has some in the back of her house that are very low. She has contacted the utility companies, but nothing has been done. She also expressed some concern regarding her neighbor feeding the deer. Mike Duffy said that Travis Hoover and he would get with her and the utility companies to see if they could facilitate something. He also said that he would pass the information on regarding the deer feeding to the City's Animal Control Officer. Nancy Hammond asked what the plans were with the Beverly Lumber site. Mike Duffy explained that the City owns that property and plans to make it part of the downtown redevelopment. Lynn Anderson thanked the City for the free exercise classes offered at the Community Center. She asked about bike docking stations, the plans for the old Quik Trip property, and personal property taxes for the Parkville Special Road District. Meredith Hauck said that the bike docking stations are on the City's radar to incorporate into the trail system. Mike Duffy explained that after 7 years of trying the City was able to purchase the old Quik Trip building and is working on plans to tear it down. He also explained that all special road districts in Platte County get to collect revenue from cities. 3 Beverly Allen -5030 NW Woodside Drive- Asked if the City could look into organizing an annual trail walk ,a community garden and curbside pick up. Meredith Hauck said that a city trail walk was a great idea and she would look into it. She also said that the City has been looking into a community garden, but that the YMCA still had some plots available in the County and that might be an option. She also noted that curbside pick up is May 2 114 and May 30 Mitch Burch- 4930 NW High Drive- Stated that he has lived in Riverside since 1952 and seen a lot of changes and all of the changes have been for the better. He also thanked the police, fire, EMT's, and public works for all they do for the City. The Mayor and members of the Board thanked the public for coming out. MOTION TO ADJOURN Alderman Homer moved to adjourn the meeting at 7:53 p.m., second by Alderman Thatcher. Yes: Homer, Thatcher, Super, Fuller, Pruett, and Cope. Motion carried 6 -0.
