Riverside Tourism Commission Final Report 1 The Heart of America Shakespeare Festival's Team Shakespeare Project Overview for The Taming of the Shrew Team Shakespeare is the apprentice acting troupe for the Heart of America Shakespeare Festival. This is a year -round program that draws students from all over the Kansas City metro area. Team Shakespeare provides multiple performance opportunities for our teen actors. The highlight of those performances is the full production of an abbreviated Shakespeare play at E.H. Young Riverfront Park each spring. This year the show produced was The Taming of the Shrew and was performed by thirty -two teenagers. The production ran for three nights which allowed the students to experience the process as a professional actor does in addition to learning skills needed to maintain a production for multiple performances. Heart of America Shakespeare Festival employs theatre professionals in the areas of Sound, Stage Management, Stage Combat, Choreography, Directing, Costuming and Music to assist the students in creating a truly professional and enjoyable product. The performances are free and open to the public. The Heart of America Shakespeare Festival and Team Shakespeare consider The Taming of the Shrew to be a success. Team Shakespeare was created in 2009. Since that time we have maintained audience numbers of between 500 and 900 at our yearly spring performance. This year we were able to continue that and were pleased to welcome 750 individuals to our production over three performances. We hope to continue pushing that number up each year, and bring even more people north of the river to beautiful E.H. Young Park, and the city of Riverside. Experiencing the works of William Shakespeare in this wonderful outdoor setting is a perfect way to kick off the summer and bring a free cultural event to the greater Kansas City area. The Heart of America Shakespeare Festival promoted The Taming of the Shrew in several ways including four e- blasts to our list of 10,000 Festival donors and patrons. We also promoted the show multiple times on our website and Facebook pages. The Festival printed 1000 artist - designed and professionally formatted flyers, and distributed those flyers to student actors to share with friends and family, as well as providing flyers to businesses, libraries and community centers throughout the metro. We also made 40 Team Shakespeare t- shirts that were worn by the students and faculty while participating in various promotional activities. In the future we will continue to expand our promotion outreach and work to build our presence in the Northland and to bring in more individuals from all over the Metro area. The Heart of America Shakespeare Festival does plan to produce a teen production again next year and will apply to return to Riverside and perform in E.H. Young Park. We appreciate the opportunity to perform in Riverside and look forward to spending time in the Northland in spring 2015. The additional income we received from the Riverside Tourism Grant allowed us to produce a more polished production that appealed to, and better served, a wider audience. We had professional quality set pieces and body microphones for enhanced sound. The audience noticed these changes and reacted favorably to the increased production values. The audience had a better viewing experience because they were able to hear the actors well in the often challenging outdoor environment. This funding also allowed us to create more effective and professional advertising. These improvements will allow us to increase our base audience and grow attendance in coming years. The Heart of America Shakespeare Festival recognizes that one of the great reasons that teens decide to become part of Team Shakespeare is the performance experience at Riverside and we appreciate the professional and stimulating environment the city helps us bring to our students. The Taming of the Shrew -cast and crew rf The Heart of America Shakespeare Festival's teen actors present their gender bending production of one of Shakespeare's most popular comedies. Meet Hit, the wildest man of Verona, and Petruchia, the woman who tries to tame him. Come see this battle of the sexes and laugh 'till your sides ache! MAY 22, AND 24 7:00 P.M.
