Gentlemen,
After discussing with Jeff, Mike McGinness requested that I put together
a few talking points on why the proposed repair (dated 2013-07-31) is
equivalent to or better than the original design.
1. Proposed repair shall provide a transition from rigid pile
supported concrete sill to non-rigid soil ballast foundation. A
transition slab shall be used that is semi-rigid in order to ease this
transition.
2. Proposed repair shall provide pandrol plate with an abrasion
pad to reduce impact stress to concrete sill below rail. Abrasion pad
could be replaced as needed due to fatigue.
3. Proposed repair shall provide a continuous steel plate below
pandrol plate to distribute load (versus single square plate below each
pandrol plate)
4. Proposed repair provides a tougher epoxy grout below continuous
steel plate to provide a more durable surface.
5. Proposed repair allows closure of rolling gate without rolling
gate rail mods.
6. Proposed repair is estimated to take 36-hour window to perform
repair work.
It should be noted that Q1 Rolling Gate was not constructed according to
L-385 Construction plans and as shown in L-385 Record Drawings. The
proposed repair is the same concept as original design except with the
above improvements.
Feel free to contact me with any questions.
Thanks,
Jason
