MEMORANDUM
Date: October 25, 2019
TO: Brian Koral, City Administrator
FROM: Chris Skinrood, Police Chief
SUBJECT: Replacement Vehicle Purchase
Mr. Koral:
As you are aware, our 2018 Ford Taurus patrol vehicle was totaled
while working an accident on Interstate 29 south and the I-635 south
exit. The vehicle amount recovered from our insurance company was
$15994.25• The amount does not include any damaged emergency
equipment, nor does it include potential destruction of our license
plate reader system that was also involved. The vehicle has had the
equipment removed, and the LPR has been sent to the manufacturer
for re-certification, or it will be determined if it was totaled as well.
The cost for a replacement 202o Ford Explorer is $39, 271 purchased
through Shawnee Mission Ford, the regional MARC dealership. Ford
no longer produces the Taurus, so there are additional costs for
replacement items such as the plastic rear seat and prisoner partition
as well as other vehicle equipment. The majority of equipment will not
fit a new vehicle. I am requesting $23, 276.75 to replace the totaled
vehicle. This cost does not include the installation of equipment or
certain equipment replacement due to model change and graphics
install. The additional cost for those items is approximately
$9,600.00. Total request is for $32,877. The one remaining unknown
is the condition of our license plate reading system. We will not know
about that for another two to three weeks. This vehicle was slated to
be replaced in the 2020-2021 budget so that would be handled now.
