MINUTES
TOURISM COMMISSION
RIVERSIDE, MISSOURI
Monday, September 8, 2008
6:00 p.m.
The Tourism Commission for the City of Riverside, Missouri, met in the Board of Aldermen Conference Room at
City Hall, 2950 NW Vivion Road, Riverside, Missouri, on September 8, 2008.
Chair Jason Rule called the meeting to order. Answering roll call were Deana Winter, Jerry Pietsch,
Randy Rose, Dirk van der Linde and Jason Rule. Also present were Meredith Hauck, Communications
and External Affairs Coordinator, and Jane Henry, Executive Administration Assistant.
Motion to approve Minutes Deana Winter made a motion to approve the minutes of August 11,
of August 11, 2008 2008, and Randy Rose seconded. All voted in favor. Motion carried.
Tourism Enhancement Grant Meredith Hauck, Communications/External Affairs Coordinator, told
Process Update the commission that there had been four applicants for a Tourism
Enhancement Grant: Bell Road Barn Players, Scottish Highland
Games, Northland Symphony, and Platte County Arts Council. The
group meets on September 15 to begin considering the applications.
The committee will consist of Linda Casey, Ruth Roth, Cindi Rice,
Debbie Leader, and Sandy Gardner. Jerry Pietsch and Dean Winter
will also serve on the committee as representatives of the Tourism
Commission.
Tourism Fund Update Hauck outlined the money available in the tourism fund: $57,700 in
short term funding, $127,963 in long term funding and $100,000 in
grants. She suggested that in the future, requests for funds be funded at
the full level requested or not at all. She said the long range forecast is
for $150,000 annually but, in reality, it could be closer to $200,000.
Dirk van der Linde talked about the need for volunteers. He said he
had talked to Debra McArthur who is in charge of freshman orientation
for Park University. A part of the freshman curriculum at Park is
focused on community service. He suggested conducting surveys at
Riverfest and these Park students might be interested. A point person
for Riverfest would be needed. Hauck said the point person is Mayor
Rose. Van der Linde offered to help coordinate the effort.
Motion to approve KC After a discussion of the Scottish Highland Games proposal, Rose
Scottish Highland Games, made a motion to approve the KC Scottish Highland Games, Inc.,
Inc., Funding Request for Funding Request for $7,500 and van der Linde seconded. All voted in
$7,500 favor. Motion carried.

3) Promote current attractions and increase city use. The commission
then brainstormed about possible events they would like to see. Winter
and van der Linde liked the idea of Art in the Park. Van der Linde said

that there could be a connection with the Kansas City Art Institute
(KCAI) facility planned for the Briarcliff development in Riverside. It
art fair. Winter added that she has connections
with the KCAI artist group and they would be willing to help with such
an event. Other ideas were:
Rose Backyard BBQ with fireworks
Hauck Homes Tour
Rule Concerts in the Park
Hauck suggested that a branding effort is needed for the city and the
Tourism Commission could consider supporting it.
For the next commission meeting, Pietsch, Winter and van der Linde
will focus on goals and potential events that would involve overnight
stays and Rose and Rule will call cities and counties to collect their
tourism data.
Adjournment By unanimous consent, the commission adjourned until its next
meeting on October 20.
