WHEREAS, environmental education and community action are
universally acknowledged as critical components of waste and energy
reduction strategies, and the Environmental Excellence Campaign is
a metropolitan community action and education effort designed to
encourage waste reduction and energy conservation; and
WHEREAS, the Environmental Excellence Campaign is a voluntary
program designed to encourage businesses, government, non-profit
organizations, institutions, schools and private residents to
increase their awareness of the impact of their daily choices on
the environment and the quality of life experienced in their
community; and
WHEREAS, the Environmental Excellence Campaign asks that each
participant commit to recycle, buy recycled products, and to take
specific actions in their daily life, at work, at home and at play,
to reduce their individual and collective impact on the community's
natural and built resources; and
WHEREAS, the Environmental Excellence Campaign annually
provides special recognition in the form of a limited number of
Environmental Excellence Awards; and
WHEREAS, the Board of Aldermen desires to confirm the
commitment of Riverside as a member of the Environmental 8xcellence
Campaign;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THS BOARD OF ALDERMEN OF THE
CITY OF RIVERSIDE, MISSOURI, AS FOLLOWS:
The Board of Aldermen does hereby endorse and support the
Environmental Excellence Campaign (operated by Bridging the Gap,
Inc., with funds provided by the MARC Solid Waste Management
District and the City of Kansas City, Missouri) as a metropolitan
environmental education effort which provides both educational
materials and resources to participating members; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Board of Aldermen authorizes
and directs staff to explore active participation in the
Environmental Excellence Campaign and to seek opportunities to
provide the Campaign's resources and educational materials for the
citizens and residents of the City of Riverside, and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that when the City of Riverside
believes that special recognition is justified for efforts of the
City, they are authorized and directed to make application for the
Environmental Excellence Awards and to bring to the public's
attention the environmentally sensitive and responsible actions of
the City to the fullest extent possible.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVES what when the City staff believes that
businesses in the City deserve special recognition for their
environmental efforts, the staff are authorized and directed to
encourage said businesses to make application for the Environmental
Excellence Awards.
