HomeMy WebLinkAbout2004-08-17 - Recognizing US SoldiersResolution to recognize U.S. Soldiers Recognizing the sacrifices U.S. Soldiers have made in the war on terrorism and the accomplishments in improving the lives of the people of Iraq. Whereas, hundreds of U.S. soldiers have given their lives in the pursuit of liberating and bringing stability and democracy to the people of Iraq; Whereas, U.S. soldiers are committed to rebuilding Iraq's infrastructure and fostering goodwill between people: Whereas, nine million new math and science textbooks have been printed and distributed without pro-Saddam Hussein propaganda and one hundred fifty nine thousand desks distributed to Iraqi schools; Whereas, seventy six thousand new jobs have been created by the Iraqi National Employment Program; Whereas, the current budget for the Iraqi Ministry of Health is twenty five times greater than the annual budget under Saddam Hussein's reign, resulting in a 25% increase in immunizations among Iraqi children and immunizations for pregnant Iraqi women to improve prenatal care; Whereas, twenty million of Iraq's twenty seven million citizens receive clean water due to new water and sanitation projects; Whereas, eighty-one Iraqi women serve on neighborhood and district councils around Baghdad and six Iraqi women have been appointed as Cabinet level Ministers in the newly formed Iraqi Interim Government; Whereas, obstacles remain but America's commitment to fostering, peace and,$oodwill does not. fade; Be it further that the Mayor and Board of Aldermen of Riverside, Missouri express their support for our soldiers and their friends and family for their commitment to peace and democracy, and offer our prayers and condolences to those brave men and women who have given their lives for freedom.
